On the afternoon of July 15th, "MAD UNDER CONSTRUCTION", MAD's first solo show in Beijing, opened at Tokyo Gallery in the 798 art district with over 600 artists, designers and critics in attendance.
A striking visual introduction to a groundbreaking firm, MAD Under Construction crosses disciplinary boundaries to introduce MAD's design philosophy. In displaying projects currently being built - including the Absolute Towers near Toronto, and the recently completed Hongluo Clubhouse near Beijing - as well as conceptual projects, the exhibition puts forth two narratives. It lays the context of "mad construction" within China; the unprecedented, slapdash urbanization which renders cities soulless. Against this backdrop, MAD's controversial works and methodology also emerge as strident arguments, a nervy stance for more rigorous social critique and historical perspective.
It is this approach which led to MAD being named one of the Young Architects of 2006 by the Architectural League of New York. After years of theoretical practice, MAD's works are under construction; this defining exhibition will run for one month before moving to the Venice Architecture Biennale.
