On Nov 11, 2013, Ma Yansong was invited to give a lecture at the Berlage Institute, Rotterdam. In the lecture, Ma introduced MAD's recent projects, and spoke on his ideas about future city development and his wish to combine the eastern philosophy with modern city construction.
Berlage Institute was founded in 1989 by architect Herman Herzberger. Aldo van Eyck is its spiritual leader. The institute traditionally invites renowned architects for lectures, exchanges and teaching, including Stan Allen, Hani Rashid, Greg Lynn, Terrence Riley among others.
This time, Ma Yansong’s Europe trip including two lectures in PlAT, Oslo, and Kunsthaus Bregenz, and a presentation he did at Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, for his competition design for the museum’s new collection building. The design was much liked by local media and public, one of whom said during the interview that he hopes the government can “just show the courage and pick the icon”.
