ICON magazine published a special edition about MAD’s ongoing projects. Inside, Ma Yansong talks with Douglas Murphy about nearing the completion of the Absolute Towers, being the first Chinese architect to win a major international competition, and what it means to represent a generation.

Feelings Are Facts is the first collaboration between Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson and leading Chinese architect, Ma Yansong.

The Monster’s Footprint, MAD’s design for the Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Architecture and Urbanism, was unveiled in Shenzhen’s Citizen’s Square. Paved with pink EPDM material, the sunken footprints serve as a playground and gathering space for local residents.

On the night of September 24th, following a lecture at Tsinghua University, Toyo Ito joined a round-table dinner talk with young Chinese architects at the MAD office. The dinner discussion centered on Asian architecture and its practice.

MAD TRAVEL FELLOWSHIP 2009 announced finalists today from 237 applications of 69 architecture departments/schools in China.

Ma Yansong will lecture at MAK, Vienna on May 19th 2009 as part of the MAK’s ‘Changing Architecture’ series, in which leading architects of today are invited to share their views.

An official ceremony kicked off MAD’s Conrad Hotel groundbreaking today. The building appreciates slowness situated among the standard orthogonal buildings produced today.

Ma Yansong will speak at the The 11th International Bauhaus Colloquium in April, 2009 in the German city of Weimar. The Bauhaus Colloquia is an internationally known forum for debate on architecture and urbanism and allows diverging ideas an output for discussion and research.

MAD Rabbit, a special issue of A+U Magazine, was published in december’s issue. The issue featured a selection of MAD projects at different stages of realization, illustrating the progress MAD has made since the completion of our first built project, ‘Hongluo Clubhouse’, in 2005.

On his recent visit to the U.S., Ma Yansong was invited to lecture at the GSAPP at Columbia University as well as the American Institute of Architects at the Center of Architecture (AIA), his topic for discussion being “MAD in China”.

‘Superstar: A Mobile China Town’, will be featured in the exhibition ‘Uneternal City’ at the 11th Venice Biennale, curated by Aaron Betsky. The exhibition invites 12 young global architects to suggest interventions into an anonymous, suburban area of Rome, which will exploit and represent new spaces and urban fabrics of a Rome of the future.

The ground breaking ceremony for the Sino Steel International Plaza took place today at the No. 1 site of Xiangluo Bay, Tianjing. Designed by MAD, the 358-meter-high building will be the landmark of the new economic district being created in the city. It is planned for completion in 2012.

The exhibition, titled ‘Dans la ville chinoise – Regards sure les mutations d’un Empire’ (Inside the Chinese City- A Look at the Mutations of an Empire), is being held by ‘Cite de l’Architecture et du Patrimoine’, a museum in Paris devoted to architecture. ​
